Theairfieldopenedin1916,todefendLondonagainsttheGermanAirshipandBomberraidsoftheFirstWorldWar, Operationalflyingceasedin1919,butrestartedwhentheairfieldbecameanoperationalRAFFighterstationonceagainin 1927.Morethan52squadronsfromsevennations,includingtheU.S.andNorway,flewfromthebasebeforethelast operationalfightersquadronleftin1958.It'sroleintheBattleofBritaininevitablybroughtthecommunityintothefiringline and during enemy raids on the airfield many bombs fell on North Weald village and the surrounding areas.
OwnedbyEppingForestDistrictCouncilthis385acreexampleofourheritageisaworkingairfieldwithfacilitiesforallkindsof aviationactivities;includinggliding,veteranandexecutiveaircraft.Itisanactivebaseforcompaniesinvolvedinaircraftrestoration, maintenance and sales, providing a home for a number of classic aircraft collections and the unique ‘ Squadron’.
